November is National Vitamin D Awareness Month
11.11.01 - SISU declares 2nd annual Vitamin D Awareness Month
SISU, a leading manufacturer of premium vitamins and supplements in Canada, is promoting November 2011 as the 2nd annual National Vitamin D Awareness Month.
The Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) suggests that because of our limited exposure to the sun during the winter, Canadians do not get enough vitamin D. It is estimated the economic burden of vitamin D deficiency in Canada is approximately $14.4 billion per year.
Known for its role in the regulation of calcium and bone metabolism, vitamin D has been identified for its key function in immune system health, and its role in reducing the risk of auto-immune diseases, diabetes, heart disease and much more. Of particular interest is the effect that vitamin D appears to have in reducing the risk of various cancers. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vitamin D reduces the overall risk of cancer by up to 60%.
November 2, 2011 has again been declared Vitamin D day by Gregor Robertson, Mayor of Vancouver. Teams of volunteers will be positioned outside Burrard, Cambie/Broadway, Commercial/Broadway, Stadium, and Yaletown skytrain stations from 7:30-9:30 AM, handing out samples, literature and coupons. In addition, activities and promotions are scheduled across Canada to help educate the public on the importance of vitamin D.
Vitamin D day declarations have also been made for the same date in the following BC cities: Fort St. John, Kelowna, Kitimat, Port Alberni, Port Coquitlam, Prince George, Richmond, Burnaby, Whistler, Kamloops; plus Wood Buffalo, AB; Bathurst, NB; Pickering, ON; and Regina and Prince Albert, SK. More cities are expected to sign on by the end of October.
SISU pledges to donate 5% of total vitamin D national sales made to retailers during November to InspireHealth, a non-profit organization where medical doctors provide guidance to patients to integrate research-backed natural approaches into their cancer treatment and recovery.
SISU has a long-standing commitment to promoting overall health and wellness. Joining forces with city officials like Mayor Gregor Robertson and InspireHealth is just one way that SISU is working to improve the health of Canadians by natural and cost-effective means.
